ABSTRACT

The value of using digital and social media in NGOs and volunteering associations’ strategic communication practices is increasingly being recognized by LGBTQI organizations and players, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this challenging context, Italian activists are rethinking how to best support the LGBTQI community through digital media and outreach efforts, investing in both their internal and external communication infrastructures in order to continue political, cultural and social activities at a distance. This chapter lays out and builds the digital profiles of key Italian LGBTQI actors working across thematic areas (multi-issues, culture and education, family, and faith and homosexuality). Second, it investigates actors’ organizational communication practices, in particular, their audience reach, media capacity and priorities, and their potential in strengthening networks and alliances, shaping movement mobilizations, and advancing a more emancipatory agenda for gender and human rights.
