ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the study, providing a synopsis of the different topics discussed in the whole book and highlighting important findings. Among the most important findings discovered through the study is the persistence of the duality of fadaā and tareeq in the Arabian understanding of sūq-ness, from its pre-Islamic beginnings to its recent post-Islamic enunciations. The chapter summarizes the urban, social, religious and political development of this duality, concluding that, without an in-depth scrutiny of Arab poetry, such deeper structures of meanings would have remained obscure. The chapter closes with the idea of the sūq as a passageway, hinting at the different possibilities that an Arab sūq and its constructed socio-urban meanings can offer to future urban planning research in the region.
