ABSTRACT

This chapter reveals the presence of persuasion in texts through the concepts of inscribed (explicit) and invoked (implicit) attitude. Based on the quantitative results, there are many more inscribed instances in the Chinese corpus. These occurrences are compared when the corresponding texts in the English corpus also have inscribed instances, only have invoked instances, or have no instance (either inscribed or invoked) at all. Invoked instances in both corpora are also compared based on the types of invocation appearing the most in both corpora: attitudinal tokens, graduation, counter-expectancy, logical-semantic relations, intra-textual references, and in-group allusions.
