ABSTRACT

The villagers in the area considered this a blessing and a sign of prosperity. In due course, the school was supplemented by a rural education centre, and a rural health centre. Rishi Valley is located in a valley surrounded by farmers with small landholdings, and shepherds, village communities, who lead very simple lives in a somewhat arid terrain. Krishnamurti chose this location precisely for its great natural beauty, isolation, quietude, and yet situated in the midst of the community, small farmers, shepherds, and village folk, who are the bedrock of this country. Krishnamurti’s focus on inclusive education underpins Rishi Valley’s rural education programme and enables us to consider individual freedom as being central to our understanding of human and the social development. At the same time, the means too need to enable freedom in the very processes that engender development.
