ABSTRACT

Ideas for A Sensory Approach to STEAM Teaching and Learning arose from a lesson on plants where a student teacher used a visual chart to teach about plants when just outside the classroom window were natural examples of plants as far as the eye could see. A quick trip outside would give students multiple opportunities to view, feel, and smell variations among plants and plant parts. The use of materials for multisensory learning during classroom lessons is the primary theme of this book. Readers will find numerous ideas for planning lessons that use sensory materials to support the critical visual and auditory senses. Though visual and auditory senses are inherent to most lessons, the other senses, tactile/kinesthetic, smell, and even taste play an important role in deepening learning through action. Part I includes information on the brain, serial position (lesson sequence), emotion and learning, vocabulary, and thematic unit planning. Part II contains 25 STEAM unit plans divided among five themes, all with a multisensory approach to teaching. The authors developed knowledge-rich units on science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics based on national standards. In the last chapter, readers will learn about the problems and pitfalls the authors encountered when writing the unit plans.
