ABSTRACT

This chapter provides five STEAM Unit Plans, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, for land and underwater features and ways they were created through tectonic plate movement. Readers will find multiple ways to support learning in science through the identification of continental and oceanic landforms and the location of fault lines. Step-by-step directions guide students to use technology to search for relevant online information, and share it through presentation tools. Important information on bridge building, a civil engineering undertaking, focuses on important skills necessary to identify a problem, design a solution, test the solution, make improvements, and retest for an ultimate design. Engineers often view their work as a series of life and death decisions. The arts, drawing and sculpture, offer sensory-rich activities that include the use of multiple art media for imaginative thought, innovation, and nonverbal communication. Mathematics focuses on one-, two-, and three-dimensional shapes students see and use every day as they explore and count their sides and angles and classify them according to their properties. The five unit plans have nine steps: Become an Expert; Essential Questions; Objectives; Vocabulary; Materials and Resources; Set, Procedures, and Closure; Formative and Summative Assessment; Extend Learning; and a Sensory Checklist. Online References at the end of each unit plan contain QR codes that can be optically used to access websites.
