ABSTRACT

To cultivate a safety habit of mind, it is necessary to impress upon the worker at all times, in season and out of season, the importance of taking every precaution he reasonably can take to avoid the risk of accident. Probably every kind of warning notice and accident bulletin would lose its efficacy in course of time unless an interest in accident prevention is stimulated by the existence of ‘ Safety Committees.’ The mechanical side of accident prevention is of much greater importance than could be deduced from most of the accident statistics published. The importance of mechanically preventable accidents depends chiefly on their severity. In many occupations it is important that the eyes be protected by safety goggles. It has been estimated that in normal times over 5 per cent. of all industrial accidents must be ascribed to eye injuries, and in munition work they probably amount to 7 per cent., and occasionally may reach 20 per cent.
