ABSTRACT

After the weekly number of hours to be worked in an industry has been decided upon, there still remains the important question of the distribution of these hours through the week. The principle of a 512 day week of work being admitted, it follows that a 54-hour week implies 934 or to hours of work per day on five days a week, whilst a 48-hour week implies 834 hours a day. The importance of the one-break system in improving output during the first few hours of the working day, as compared with the two-break system which reduces output, can be established by direct measurement. The method of cutting up long spells of work by brief rest intervals has frequently been adopted in recent years. The weekly day of rest is almost always taken on Sunday, so it is worth while to record what evidence we have in favour of abolishing Sunday labour.
