ABSTRACT

Karl Heinrich Marx (1818–1883), perhaps, is one of the most controversial yet influential figures in human history. He was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and social revolutionary. His work has been lauded as well as criticised across the globe. Marx was repulsed by the poverty and inequality that characterised early capitalist societies of the nineteenth century. For Marx, the private ownership of the forces of production was the root cause of the exploitation and misery of the working class. Hence, Marx believed that it is only with the abolition of the institution of private property in a revolutionary manner that a truly egalitarian society could be established. Marx dreamt of a communist society which would be characterised by the communal ownership of forces of production. Marx is often called the Father of Communism.
