ABSTRACT

This chapter examines and evaluates the constructions of the ocean by the important ideological power holders of Taiwan. The examples that are interpreted are mainly the published written works. Functionally, this chapter is a literature review of the available studies on the maritime and ocean affairs of Taiwan. For most natural scientists, the ocean was constructed in accordance with the Micronesia Model, while scholars of marine engineering constructed the ocean according to the Indian Ocean Model. In the case of economists and management scholars, the ocean was constructed following the Freitian Variation. Sea power scholars mainly constructed the ocean in the manner of the original Mediterranean Sea Model, whereas the main body of legal intellectuals and political scientists constructed the ocean in the style of the Micronesia Model. In the publications of historians and literary writers related to maritime and ocean affairs altogether, the ocean was constructed in the fashion of the Indian Ocean Model, whereas the Tao writer, Syanman Rapongan, constructed the ocean following the Micronesia Model. Together with Chapter 2, this third chapter of the monograph also demonstrates that the uses, regulations and representations of the ocean are mutually influencing and can affect the construction of the ocean.
