ABSTRACT
This chapter will give a compact overview of the basic material used in language reconstruction. Beginning with speech sounds and the principles of phonetics and phonology, the chapter will continue with words, word classes, morphemes, and syntax. The chapter serves as a foundation for the reader to refer back to and is referenced in the following chapters, where many of the basic categories of language structure are mentioned and discussed.
