ABSTRACT

This last chapter focusing on approaches will attempt to give an overview of the cultural evolutionary approach. Initially, the chapter will describe the origin and roots of this approach, which shares many similarities with the linguistic anthropology approach described in a previous chapter (Chapter 8). The first section will go deeper and describe the theoretical underpinnings of the approach and how they relate to those of other methods and models of language reconstruction. Next, the chapter will describe some of the concepts concerning data design and methods and models for analysis. Much of the methodology described here relates to methods described in previous chapters, in particular the phylogenetic method (Chapter 6).
