ABSTRACT
The changing role of academia in terms of its commercialisation is discussed in this chapter. It is argued that, while commercial interactions in academia existed right from Independence, the nature of these interactions transformed given the global harmonisation of patent laws and the primacy of knowledge economies across the globe. This chapter deconstructs the neoliberal myth of incentivising the supply-side and shows how Indian academic institutions are turning into patent factories at the cost of public resources.
