ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the development of medical biotechnology took place in India under a neoliberal political-economic system. The reason why this is an important concern to be addressed is because in the United States where biotechnology first came into prominence, it took place through the coming together of several actors and institutions that were previously pursuing a conflicting set of agendas. The growth of biotech industry is the result of large-scale subsidies from the state that were implementing a neoliberal economic agenda at the same time as the implementation of austerity measures. State support for this industry in the US took place in various forms, such as direct monetary support, deregulation of financial markets, and enactment of favourable legislation, to list a major few. However, this vigorous patenting in the anticipation of demand never really took fruition.
