ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a proper perspective of the history and early developments of the sugar industry as a background against which to understand and analyse the changes which have taken place. It discusses the organization and control of production. The book deals with the marketing of sugar, and discusses the nature of the market for sugar, the way it functions, principal forms and instruments of trading, and who uses it. It discusses the aims, objectives, and operations of the various international agreements which have been implemented in order to stabilize conditions in the industry The book concludes with a discussion of developments in the USSR sugar industry which represents an interesting contrast in terms of production and marketing policies.
