ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the theories of the gaze, Whiteness, and allyship that frame the analyses of the contemporary television series (Insecure, She’s Gotta Have It, Dear White People, and Atlanta) and films (Get Out, BlacKkKlansman, and Dear White People) subsequent chapters take up. This introductory chapter also emphasizes the cultural significance of film and television as pedagogical tools while suggesting the book’s broader implications for unpacking representations of White would-be allies in other texts and media.
