ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Simien’s film and subsequent Netflix series Dear White People, considering the character Gabe Mitchell as an example of the ways in which internalized scripts of White supremacy encumber interracial relationships, as well as the possibility for White antiracist identity development as outlined by psychologist Janet E. Helms and others. As the boyfriend of the film’s and series’ stridently political protagonist Sam White, Gabe plays an especially crucial role in calling attention to both the unearned advantages that accrue to Whiteness and the potential for White people to transform into agents of antiracist change.
