      ABSTRACT

Government instituted women's committees and the training programmes of the government and other agents are discussed. Interaction within groups, and between groups and other agents, has intensified through such training programmes as educational visits and leadership training. In the context of women's groups, leadership training is mainly organized for group leaders in the various administrative levels discussed. Leadership training courses which last for one week are routinely organized once-a-year for each district. Apart from exposing women's groups to skills, training forums facilitate informal interaction among women themselves, particularly because participants are housed in a hotel or a training institution. Members of Kiangochi Women's Group thus requested the author to join and assist in their fight for improved representation of women in these committees. Group meetings are also forums where members of a group interact with each other and spontaneously discuss a wide range of issues including local gossip.
