ABSTRACT

The chapter extends the discussion about economic democracy from the nation-state to the global economy by including institutions of global governance. Alternative theories of international governance, cosmopolitan democracy and world government are reviewed. The chapter discusses attempts to put in place international economic structures that enhance participation in the benefits of countries of the Global South (developing countries). The chapter examines the creation of the New International Economic Order (NIEO) in the 1970s and the role played by the United Nations General Assembly, the G-77 and the Non-Aligned Movement in this process. The NIEO is involved in 21st century initiatives such as the Millennium Development Goals of 2000–15 and the Sustainable Development Goals 2015–30.
