ABSTRACT

Various models have been developed for innovations in both Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmented Alternative Communication. The “Principle of parsimony” refers to a design of AT that should be at its simplest, to increase effectiveness and efficiency. Minimal energy refers to the least necessary mental and physical effort for any task to be performed. A designer should be aware of the target group or individual to design a “best fit” device based on the personality or need of the individual or community to the maximum extent possible. The design of any device needs to be consistent with the availability of resources. For instance, mental effort, cognitive aspect, and physical or environmental aspects need to be considered based on the availability of resources. Therefore, the designer should keep in mind economic, social, mobility, psychological aspects, etc. while designing devices.
