ABSTRACT

Education is the basic requirement of any civilized society. Non-formal education is an alternative learning approach compared with formal institutional learning and distance education and Open education are examples of non-formal education. This chapter focuses on the “distance education” learning approach. Distance education is one of the non-formal educational processes that can be defined as an educational process imparted from a distance. A systematic theoretical view of distance education was postulated in 1970. In 1972 Moore raised his voice regarding various hindrances which slowed the progress of distance education, one of them was a “lack of attention” Moore named it a “micro factor”. The rationale behind ignoring “teaching” and “teacher” as a characteristic of distance education was that he thought that learning encompasses helping an organization that is to be performed by machines, people, and material.
