ABSTRACT

Since the dawn of time, human beings have debated how to relate to one another. This not only marks the beginning of morality but also the fact that all human relations are inextricably linked to morality. Over thousands of years, humanity – in fact, those we call moral philosophers – have developed a vast and often bewildering array of moral philosophies. One ordering framework for these philosophies is Kohlberg’s concept of seven moralities. Placed in this framework, HRM’s moralities can be classified. This means that HR managers have to deal with, for example, issues at the lowest level of morality (1), e.g. bullying, sexual harassment, disciplinary action, etc. but also with issues of performance management and Machiavellianism (2), with organisational culture (3), law and order and HR policies (4), justice and fairness (5), human rights (6), and finally also with corporate social responsibility and sustainability (7).
