ABSTRACT

It is vital that leaders in gifted education understand and recognize the root causes of gifted disproportionality for culturally and linguistically diverse students in their systems. Data and analytics can play a critical role in addressing these inequalities. By examining specific data, leaders can make data-driven decisions around resource allocation to impact district-wide gifted services for culturally and linguistically diverse gifted learners. As we look at recruiting and retaining our Black and Brown students in gifted education, data can significantly change the way we look at gifted and talented disproportionality across schools, districts, and states and improve the way we provide opportunity and access for these students. The authors will expand upon traditional data that is collected in schools and districts, such as achievement test scores, to discuss how to collect and analyze student, family, and educator perception inventories, community data, and equity audits that celebrate diversity and inclusion to help drive decision making. This chapter discusses equity allowance formula and how it can help educational systems in highlighting the disparities and discrepancies within their systems to increase access to gifted education services for students of color.
