ABSTRACT

This chapter will briefly introduce the reader to the discipline of didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and its main modes. It will provide a comprehensive and clearly organized literature review of the main contributions to the field to date, from scientific papers, theses and national as well as international research projects. It will start by presenting research on didactic subtitling and its main didactic types, namely didactic interlingual standard subtitling, didactic reverse interlingual subtitling, didactic intralingual subtitling and didactic subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). Then, it will describe the state of the art of dubbing, the second-most-studied DAT mode, along with its main types: didactic reverse interlingual dubbing, didactic intralingual dubbing and creative didactic dubbing. Subsequently, the chapter will outline the fast-growing empirical research on didactic audio description (AD). The two following sections are devoted to two emerging DAT modes: didactic voice-over and didactic free commentary, whose pedagogical potential calls for further investigation. Finally, the chapter will focus on teacher training experiences and resources.
