ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by looking at the series of Saturday Night Live impersonations that helped to launch the Twitter war between Trump and comedians. The chapter then analyzes how the bluster and hyperbole of Trump forced political comedy to use different tactics in its jokes, ones that still used irony, but struggled with the challenge of how to exaggerate an exaggeration. Comedians found themselves often playing it straight and serious to Trump and his team’s farce, an inversion that has had a big impact on the way in which these comedians are seen as trustworthy sources of information to the public.
