ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is on the application of this pedagogy to a freshman seminar on Arctic climate change and social justice. Transdisciplinary by design, the course opens with an introduction to the Arctic and the story of the Scientist and the Elder, after which student responses and questions are noted. An entire section is devoted to the teaching of systems thinking and applying it to climate change in the Arctic. A key entity in this regard is sea ice, which is central to three systems: global climate, local ecosystems, and the local socio-cultural system of the Iñupiat. Three sections elaborate each of these systems and their interconnections. The importance of small group work and interdisciplinary projects is discussed. Finally, challenges and successes of this experience are elucidated.
