ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book covers how trauma affects the brain and the orange section covers how trauma affects the body, viewed through a polyvagal lens. It offers a foundational platform for the remaining 26 ‘What Could Help' cards that have been divided into five main sections: Trauma-Informed Mindfulness, Trauma-Informed Self-Compassion, The Road to Recovery, and finally Onwards and Beyond: Visual Referencing. Research for this project has been driven by what has been stipulated as helpful stabilisation methods in terms of what can support human physiology to recover from trauma. Currently, the author work as an art psychotherapist in the NHS within adult community secondary mental health services. She has also been heavily influenced and inspired by trauma specialists who are able to draw on what has been uncovered by neuroscience and how human physiology is impacted by trauma.
