ABSTRACT

A common framework that is utilised for trauma recovery was developed in the late 1800s by Pierre Janet; he designed a three-stage protocol for trauma recovery. All the tools in the ‘What Could Help' section of this toolkit are designed to build up skills in phase 1. Pierre Janet advocated if one chooses to move forward to phases 2 and 3, phase 1 would have to be established first. For some phase 1 is enough and they may not wish to continue to phases 2 and 3. ‘Stabilisation' is a term for when one feels safe and secure most of the time. Psychoeducation is a treatment modality and combines both psychotherapeutic and educational interventions. Unlike many other psychosocial models grown out of the traditional medical model, which focuses on ‘what's wrong with a person'. Psychoeducation is more holistic in its approach. There is a strong evidence base which supports the use of psychoeducation in community settings.
