ABSTRACT

The origins of mindfulness can be traced back around 2500 years where it began as a Buddhist meditation practice. The development of mindfulness practice can be an integral tool in trauma recovery. In essence, mindfulness is the practice of being in the present moment and to simply notice past and future thinking instead of letting them ‘rule the show'. This chapter focuses on several flashcards which are designed to offer the individual some choices in how they can begin practising a ‘mindful attitude' to help them accomplish an arduous task. Rothschild created the ‘mindful gauge' to remind trauma survivors that they have access to a varied choice of options when trying to be mindfully aware in any given moment. Elizabeth Stanley developed the Contact Points Exercise within her Mindfulness-Based Mind Fitness Training course as a foundation upon which the remainder of her programme was built. Its goal is to create ‘awareness of the contact between human body and immediate surroundings'.
