ABSTRACT

All major religions emphasize the need for love – even the Golden Rule focuses on showing others the love we hope to be shown. Love as compassion and curious empathy. By sharing a heartfelt story of the empathy shown by crisis chaplains in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this chapter explores empathy as a verb, put into action. Self-empathy is the first step before students can express empathy for others. When empathy for others is discovered, this chapter offers the seven faces that might be revealed. This chapter challenges schools to place empathy at the center of all acts of service, kindness, and advocacy.
