ABSTRACT

In order to expect students to be able to effectively explore and express growth and development, educators must teach them how to articulate and assess their learning. If students cannot articulate their own learning, how can teachers offer meaningful feedback, guidance, and accountability throughout the learning process? The final step in the process of Purpose-Driven Learning is empowering students’ ability to self-assess their own growth and development. “What do I have to do to get an A?” All teachers have been asked this question and their response impacts the drive of their students’ learning. Authentic learning cannot be focused on simply acquiring content knowledge. Assessment requires more than standardized testing or simply assigning a final grade. Students must be empowered to self-assess so that they can confidently express a holistic understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of.
