ABSTRACT

Schools talk a lot about “safe spaces” – yet do very little more than put up “Bully-Free Zone” posters and share a “Diversity and Inclusion” statement on their website. Creating a sense of belonging takes intentionality and needs to be nurtured throughout the entire school year. This chapter offers heartfelt stories of individuals discovering communities of inclusion and affirmation, and as a result, coming to experience true belonging. It explores the implicit biases and micro-aggressions traditionally marginalized and excluded communities experience within our student body and challenges teachers to intentionally reflect and take action. In order for our students to become all that they are capable of, they must know they are valued, that they are worthy, and that they belong.
