An examination of the legacy of ritual and sacred clowns, contrasted with the professional clown of the post-Renaissance; exploring the jester and the clown's position in the hierarchy of the court; investigation of the trickster god in mythology, concepts of boundary-crossing and amorality; the contemporary humanitarian clown as inheritor of clown tradition.
