ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process for promotion to full professor and discusses the experiences of mid-career faculty members in public affairs programs about this promotion. Data for this chapter is derived mainly from interviews conducted with faculty. Special attention is paid to the promotion timeline and process for tenured faculty, the changing work expectations that tenured faculty have in terms of research, service, and teaching and how work expectations and career advancement differ for women and men. The chapter concludes with recommendations for both individuals and institutions of higher learning about ways to improve the promotion process of tenured faculty.
