ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the representation of public affairs faculty in administrative positions based on gender, ethnicity, race, and academic rank, and it discusses the gendered norms and obstacles academic women must face when considering leadership career avenues. The chapter further discusses the role of mentoring for the faculty advancement into leadership positions, and it concludes with recommendations to improve the representation of women and faculty members from ethnically and racially under-represented groups in leadership roles. Metaphors such as “glass ceiling”, “glass walls”, and “glass cliff” are used to explain the advancement of under-represented groups into academic leadership positions.
