ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the topic of a culture of experimentation within resilient organizations. The chapter presents a detailed narrative from NBCUniversal Senior Vice President Steven Gutkin and his team’s work to maintain critical functions during COVID. This team is part of a large network of people responsible for supporting the continuous operations of major film, news, and sports productions as well as the company’s theme parks. The narrative highlights the effective use of crews, capital, and exponential leadership. This case study underscores the important role of culture, in particular, a culture that seeks reality, experiments, and consists of dissimilar individuals. These three aspects of a culture of experimentation arise repeatedly in any examination of organizational resilience, and the following chapters examine each in detail.
