ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on loss. Loss is inherent in times of significant change. Dramatic uncertainty threatens dramatic loss. Leaders who build resilient organizations are keenly aware of how change may negatively impact all involved. Adaptive, exponential, resilient leaders must balance loss with preservation. This can lead to a host of deep tensions, painful decisions, and taxing questions as leaders must choose who to cut, where to eliminate spending, and even when to jettison entire divisions for the sake of future survival. If nothing else, resilient leaders must make themselves aware of the potential and actual losses involved in change. Leaders need to address losses, ideally before the triggering change takes place. The exponential leader needs to be mindful of the realities of loss and deal with them as humanely as possible.
