ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the discussion of exponential leadership with an examination of the need to care for employees. Caring for employees is profitable and prudent. This is true in normal times, but especially so during times of heightened uncertainty and crisis. Employees who do not feel cared for, especially as crisis situations subside, leave. Leaders who care for staff members in their organization will see better dedication, innovation, morale, performance, and retention in good times and bad. This chapter includes research from the Christchurch earthquakes that shows why up to 50% of employees seriously consider leaving their organization following a major disruption. The chapter discusses the “Great Resignation” that began in 2021 and how the lack of employee care both before and during COVID-19 was likely a significant contributor. Employees who do not feel appreciated, respected, and supported for their efforts and sacrifices see little need to remain with their employers. The chapter concludes with suggestions on how leaders can better support their staff and build a more resilient organization.
