ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to help the student researcher through the sometimes-daunting process of identifying a research topic as the starting point on their research journey. In addition to exploring a range of potential themes drawn from the multiplicity of issues, processes, challenges and controversies that define luxury today, we also go through some of the criteria that might influence their choice of topic, and many of the requirements that attach to postgraduate research – such as originality, criticality, positionality, representativeness and reflexivity – that the student researcher must consider when mapping out their research path.
