ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will roll up our sleeves and do the important work of reflecting on our current teacher talk and develop a game plan for consistently using an academic register throughout the day and exposing all students to rich vocabulary in our sentences and discourse across all content areas. We will:

Eliminate the less formal aspects of our speech.

Develop a plan for using academic vocabulary across the content areas.

Gain tools for bolstering our teacher talk at the word, sentence, and discourse level.

Explore strategies that aid our students’ comprehension of elevated academic vocabulary.

Also included are tips for implementing the strategy with ELs, as well as insights for working with elementary and secondary students.
