ABSTRACT

While the impact of one teacher’s use of the principle of substitutionary language in his or her classroom can lead to positive outcomes for students, those outcomes can be multiplied exponentially when all teachers within a school building work together to create a schoolwide culture of substitutionary language. Schools that create these types of schoolwide cultures are committed to the following goals:

Ongoing professional development

Time for teacher reflection and collaboration

Data collection and inspection

When teachers and administrators are committed to these goals, each individual teacher’s efforts are exponentially increased as the principle of substitutionary language is implemented across grade-levels and subject areas as a school-wide culture.
