ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors guide teachers in the final stage of the digital storytelling process: sharing multilingual learners’ (MLs’) stories. The authors focus on the benefits and challenges of sharing MLs’ digital stories, and dive deeply into the security and safety of MLs in classrooms, schools, communities, and online as the most important consideration. The authors first explain best practices with sharing digital stories in the classroom, which they consider an essential part of the digital storytelling process. They offer suggestions for issues that may arise, such as an ML who does not want others to see their digital story. They next address ways to approach sharing MLs’ digital stories with school or community audiences, which they view as a positive yet optional step in the digital storytelling process. The authors finally offer special guidance for sharing digital stories online and provide samples of the informed consent documents that a teacher may need to obtain before sharing. The featured digital storytelling project in this chapter offers insight from one teacher on how her MLs gain confidence and a stronger sense of community by sharing their digital stories at a public event.
