ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the authors describe the history of digital storytelling, from its beginning as a live performance to the digital storytelling movement it is today, associated with community building and social justice. The authors focus on the most important elements of its history to share with explanations that are easy to understand even for the novice digital storyteller. The authors discuss what digital stories are as a genre used in educational and community settings. They describe the typical step-by-step process of digital storytelling in an easy-to-reference chart that includes suggestions on how to incorporate translanguaging in each step. The authors also provide a brief overview of each step before covering each one in more detail in later chapters. The chapter includes multiple resources, including links to digital stories created in community-based and higher-education digital storytelling projects. The featured digital storytelling project in this chapter set in Seoul, South Korea, highlights how digital storytelling can be used to help more reticent language learners express themselves and their emotions.
