ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors provide guidance to prepare teachers for a digital storytelling project, considering learning goals and objectives, technological availability, ML skills, and course content and curriculum. Focusing on the learning needs of multilingual learners (MLs), readers are asked to consider, What do I want my MLs to be able to do by the end of the digital storytelling project? While answers to this question will depend on the teaching context, the authors provide sample objectives and guidance in how to align objectives to commonly used content standards. The featured digital storytelling project in the chapter provides an example of alignment to content goals for computer science. They also encourage teachers to consider the technological resources available for their digital storytelling projects. The authors provide guidance in developing a comprehensive technology picture for their setting, including sample survey questions that teachers can use to gauge their MLs’ technological skills and abilities. The authors also provide reasons why teachers should create their own digital story before starting such a project with MLs. While no preparation is fool proof, by the end of this chapter teachers will feel well prepared to start their digital storytelling project.
