ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the first steps in the digital storytelling production process: the story circle and drafting the written narrative. The authors first provide details about what a story circle is, how to prepare for a story circle, including preparing multilingual learners (MLs) to ask questions and give positive feedback, and the process of the story circle. Specific examples of the language used in story circles are provided to scaffold MLs. Next, the authors explain how to support MLs as they write their digital storytelling narrative, providing an example worksheet that can be used with MLs who have less experience writing a personal narrative. Finally, the authors give guidance on how to engage MLs in peer feedback as they read and discuss their digital story narratives with each other. They additionally offer several activities and suggestions to help MLs warm up and engage fully in their own and their classmates’ stories. The featured digital storytelling project in this chapter focuses on how a digital storytelling project can support the development of MLs’ written language skills.
