ABSTRACT

The overall ethos of the landed professions remains observably ‘male’. The emphasis on sport and socialising which spills over into office conversations can make women feel left out, ‘men waste so much time every lunchtime and after work, propping up bars and chatting. One of the most frequently mentioned ‘professional’ problems mentioned both by those with children and those without was how to reconcile the demands of work and home. It would appear that around half of older women surveyors have children. Women in offices are traditionally seen as ‘helpmeets’ and as ‘attractive’. Regarding the model it would seem that there is a strong element of ‘collusion’ and ‘colonisation’ between high status men and low status women. It is hardly surprising that many women surveyors have said that their greatest problems at the beginning come from typists and other women office workers. Technicians are another potential problem.
