ABSTRACT

As an architect, you will rely on many different consultant outfits to provide you with support on your projects, such as in the preparation of planning submissions, building regulations applications and tender packages. One of the main questions architects are asked in domestic work is whether we can ‘recommend a good builder’. When briefing the design team, you may need to spend a little longer briefing external consultants than you would with the in-house team members. Most architects can only dream of being able to carry out their projects in series. Being able to work on just one project to completion, send it off to someone else and then issue your invoice just doesn't really ever happen in an architecture practice. Consultants’ responses can be telling, but they often include only the price and when the work can be done.
