Introduction

This chapter introduces the conceptual themes of the book, reviewing the critical literature on populism while also introducing our four case studies. It outlines the conceptual methodological framework (with a focus on critical secondary discourse analysis) adopted throughout the case studies. The chapter then provides a brief outline of each case study – India, Turkey, Russia and Brazil – and the prospective lessons to be learned from a closer reading of them.
