ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the early life of Vladimir Putin, exploring the social context of the time, which had a profound influence on his later political life. It charts Putin’s (self-)transformation from a common boy to a significant figure in the Russian state apparatus – first as a member of the Committee for State Security and then as a member of the administration of the city of St Petersburg.
