ABSTRACT
Throughout the 1990s, Russia evolved from a Soviet republic into a sovereign state. This chapter examines the socio-economic transformations that took place during the 1990s; the conditions that shaped Putin’s authoritarian rise to power; and how he went on to consolidate political control of the Russian nation state.
